Amelia- Review by Thomas Rosie

Overview

Amelie is a 2001 French film about a young girl living in Paris. She has a lonely and unusual upbringing as a child which leads her to live in her own imagination and her uniquely inquisitive mind sets her on a series of mini adventures to help people with their lives whilst creating a little mischief along the way. You'd say this film is a rom-com on the face of it, but it is definitely far more unique than that and is interesting to see how someone like Amelie views life and the people around her.

Favourite Scene

Probably her pet goldfish's various suicide attempts. I've often wondered how swimming round in a bowl all day and night with nothing to view but a collapsing castle and treasure chest must feel, and i think this goldfish probably sums up what that must be like pretty well when it keeps frantically leaping out of it's bowl knowing that the fresh air and lack of H2O could be fatal.

I also enjoyed hearing the various unusual hobbies some of the characters have, her dad loves to empty his toolbox and put everything back again, we see a man thoroughly enjoying popping bubblewrap. Even Amelie's cat, who loves nothing more than to eavesdrop on children telling stories. They certainly know how to live!

Favourite Quote

"He's sleeping in the cauliflowers" said by the local Grocer's assistant. Who Amelie has got keys cut to enter his home and put some kind of sleeping powder in his drink and switch his door handles round to confuse him as she doesn't like how he speaks to his friendly helper in the shop. She certainly does have an interesting idea of justice, I'm a fan.

Final Words

Amelie is a fun film to watch, it's definitely not my usual sort of viewing but it's uniqueness does keep you interested all the way though and you feel you have to see how Amelie's adventure plays out and concludes.

I score this 3 frogs legs out of 5 🐸 🐸 🐸

I felt the same about Big Fish. In fact someone should out that in the jar. I'd love to review that film.

Another mention for the cat that enjoys the children's stories.

I thought it was weird it was billed as a Rom-Com. it strikes me as more of a fell-good film. It reminded me a bit of 'Big Fish', which I loved, although I'm not quite sure what genre it'd fit into.

Haha, fair enough. I suspected it might just be because it was French

I'm not much of a romantic either so I normally knock a star off just for that haha

Like Liam says on his reviews, scoring out of 5 might not always reflect the praise or criticism it deserves
