Overview
Snowpiercer is a fairly unique film, it is set in a post-apocalyptic world-which isn't so original, where the planet has frozen over due to a failed global warming experiment. The unique part of this story, is that the survivors have created their own world onboard a train... the name of which the film is titled. The story follows a number of characters, unhappy with their living conditions, who decide to fight to make their way to the front of the train, we soon see that this is symbolic of the real world that we live in, the further to the front of the train they reach physically, the higher up the social ranks they start climbing. Of course, there are certainly some bizarre scenes we get to see along the way.
Favourite Quote
"You see this, this is death" a woman who is some sort of manager or executioner of the train, is holding up a shoe, yes just an ordinary shoe that you'd wear on your foot. I'm not sure what crime was committed with the shoe, but the perpetrator is sentenced to have his right arm dangled out of the train until it is completely frozen solid, then brought back inside so it can be completely smashed off with a sledge hammer (I bet he won't be doing that again)
Favourite Scene
As the soldiers progress further up the train, they are met with tougher guards armed with axes, who gut a fish to show just what they are going to do to them for their anarchic behaviour. Little did they know, the fish would come back to haunt them, as one of the warriors slips over on it during battle, I found this trick very sneaky, just like a Crimea and a Pearl Harbour. The battle is quickly halted though, as everyone must wish each other a Happy New Year, and also take cover as the train is about to collide with mounds of ice built up on the tracks, once these crazy celebrations are over,
the bloody axe battle resumes as they pass through a long tunnel in complete darkness, and must fight completely blind whilst the enemies have cunningly equipped themselves with night vision goggles. All very, very sneaky.
Final Words
This film is genuinely intriguing as bizarre as it is, it cleverly shows that the way we live, and everything we know and do, can all be fitted on to one mobile locomotive, there is classrooms on it with qualified teachers, a night club, and even an aquarium. Could this genuinely be the future in years to come? Watch it to expand your mind, and decide for yourselves...
I score this film: 8/10
