The man who killed hitler and then big foot

Updated: Jun 24, 2020

This is the second time watching this film for me, and both times I’ve really enjoyed it. Sam Elliot who plays Calvin Barr is possibly the coolest man ever to grace the silver screen. He can say so much just with a look.

The man who killed Hitler and then Big Foot is a film about an ageing, humble man Calvin Barr, who is haunted by the memories of his past and his regrets in life. Namely his time in world war 2 and just before. We see this through flashbacks, were you see his life just before he carry’s out an assassination on (spoiler alert!) Adolf Hitler. As Calvin puts it latter on in the film “all I did that day was kill a man” “the monster didn’t die”. Calvin tells the 2 FBI agent’s that it didn’t matter that Hitler died they covered it up, and the idea and what he stood for carried on. That there were 2 more Hitler’s after the first that we’re just used for show. “The war was won by hero’s not by me”.

We also see in flashbacks Calvin’s sweetheart before he goes of to war. We see him trying to propose to her twice. The first time he’s interrupted at a restaurant and the second is the night before he goes off to war, but he thinks better of it and doesn’t in the end. It’s a sad story as after the war he is bound to secrecy and suffering from PTSD. Which stops him from contacting her. We find out latter from Calvin’s brother Ed that she died young.

The main plot of the film is that there is a big cover up in Canada. The press has been told that there is a serial killer on the lose. This is eluded to a couple of times in the film, we see it on a paper and hear it on Calvin’s car radio. The truth is that The Big Foot is roaming around a 50 mile area in a Canadian Forrest and he’s sick and contagious. The government say that the disease could spell out the beginning of the end for human beings. But apparently Calvin along with 3 others is immune the other 3 are just children though.

The FBI agent’s I spoke about earlier ask Calvin to go and kill Big Foot but Calvin is old and doesn’t want to kill again. After speaking with his brother though Calvin decides to go through with it. The Hunt is on! We see Calvin track and (spoiler alert!) eventually kill Big Foot in a fairly grousome scene. We are lead to believe that Calvin dies from his injury’s after this. We see Ed holding a funeral for his brother. But we find out a couple of scenes latter that Calvin survived when he is reunited with his brother and dog while Ed is out fishing.

I could go on at this point about Calvin’s box that he keeps under his bed, or tell you about the failed mugging, or even the special shave he received in world war 2 which lead him to become cursed which is probably one of my favourite scenes. But let’s leave it at this it’s a great movie and we’ll worth a watch or even 2. Sam Elliot is brilliant and the supporting cast do a great job. So I give this movie 5 special shaves out of 5! If you haven’t watched it what are you doing with your life really?
