Drunken Master

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

I don't know much about Chinese cinema at all so all I can say is that I really like this film.

The fact that some of the female characters aren't portrayed as whiney, weak and niave is welcomed given the era it was shot in. The choreographed fights were awesome as well as the training scenes being particularly impressive given how gruelling they must have been even to film for a movie.

The story is simple enough. Rich kid, son of a Kung Fu Master, acts out, and gets punished by being sent to train with a Drunken Master to out him in line. Meanwhile a rich man wants to dig up a local graveyard for industrial purposes and so hires and assassin to dispatch the Kung Fu Master. Rich kid learns the 8 Drunken God's and kills the assassin before he can kill the kid's father. Happy ending had by all. Except all the dead people.

A film with very few special effects that shows of the brilliance that is Jackie Chan and that of his associates. Slapstick humour cleverly intertwined with well directed stunts and a convincing though simple plot line. Gotta love it.

At least all the dead people got to fight to the death. It was usually their idea.
