Kung Fu Hustle

Well I'm half way through Kung Fu Hustle, a 2004 martial arts movie. So far, I'm not too sure exactly what is happening, two men pretending to be part of "the Axe gang" are involved in a brawl with a whole village, to which the real Axe gang turn up and are also defeated but offer the imposters a chance to join their gang if they can kill someone. Anyone it seems. After failing to attempt to assassinate the towns chain smoking angry land lady, two musicians appear and start playing what looks like a large stringed table which throws out knives. What is happening? Some parts remind me of a badly dubbed Chinese "Carry On" film. I thought the crazy opening was going to lead somewhere story wise, but it just remains crazy! I'm pretty sure the purpose of this film was to show impressive martial art stunt work in an amusing slapstick way, and it does it well. I do feel like I blinked for a split second and missed something vital which makes sense of the 1 hour and 39 minutes I've just watched. Maybe a second viewing is what I need to pick up on bits you miss the first time round. If you're into martial arts and comedy then definitely give this film a watch. I will give it a rather generous 70%, for delivering what it says on the tin. I've never seen anything quite like it.
