The Death of Stalin

Film review

This film is an amusing take on the chaos resulting from the newly formed power vacuum at the top of the Soviet government after their infamous leader kicks the bucket.

I really enjoyed the ensuing hilarity that came from the childish competitiveness, backstabbing and betrayal from the various government members trying to secure their position at the top.

Many people regard the act of spitting in someone’s face is the ultimate sign of disrespect. In which case, I would say that attempting to spit on someone and accidentally gobbing on your own quiff must be the ultimate humiliation. This scene was definitely one of my favourites – such a simple and crude visual gag… but it was absolute comedy gold.

Upon researching the film a little, it seems that many of the events in the film are historically accurate and I will definitely try and learn a little more about this interesting part of history.

It was quite an achievement that Iannucci was able to make light of what must have been a very dark time, but he has made sure to focus on a few sobering reminders of the ruthlessness of the old Soviet regime that make you forget for a brief moment that you’re watching a comedy.

4 poorly aimed balls of spittle out of 5
