The deep blue

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

Yawn! A film about 2 men competing to see who can hold there breath longest. There’s a weird love interest with the one Mayol but he seems more interested in dolphins. Jean Reno is an amazing actor and if it wasn’t for his present in the film I wouldn’t have made it to the end. It’s apparently loosely based on real life free divers, though the two divers in real life weren’t in direct competition and the distance they dived was exaggerated for the film.

I thought the film showed some promise at the beginning with the death of Mayol’s father, I thought well this could go off on many interesting paths but sadly no. Mayol is probably the most unemotional character I’ve ever seen on screen, I mean I’ve seen twigs with more life in them. I really struggled to stay engaged with with this nearly 3 hour long film.

My favourite scene was probably when they were getting drunk in the diving bell before diving.

I also I liked the scene where they were seeing who could hold there breath the longest before the first competition.

The music was a kind of 80 new wave romantic ambiance. Like the film I found it boring but it suited it pretty well.

I think Peel is laughing and rubbing his hands together with glee when his choices come out of the jar. He knows exactly what he's doing 😂
